Auto Accidents: Why You’ll Want A Lawyer

By George H. Lovett, Esq.

Insurers Will Rarely Help You.

Insurers make more money if they pay smaller claim settlements. The claims adjuster has no incentive to help you. In fact, they have good reason to pay you the least amount possible for your damaged auto, medical bills, and wage loss. They would rather not pay you for the pain and suffering the accident caused.

What If I’m An Accident Victim?

Immediately seek treatment if you have any discomfort, then call us. The pain usually gets worse after the first day. The longer the delay in seeking treatment, then the greater the skepticism by the adjuster. Go to the ER, or see your family doctor, or go to an after hours clinic. Call us after you see a doctor. Let us deal with the insurance company. They may try to get you to make damaging admissions or pressure you to settle for less than the claim is worth.

Call A Lawyer Immediately!

Time after time we see clients who tried … and failed … to settle their own case. These folks usually damage their case, sometimes beyond repair. Usually they do not realize the injuries get worse over time if not properly treated. Worse yet, they often are not aware of the full extent of their injuries. They tend to understate the problems or not mention them at all. When things get worse, or they later discover a problem, the adjuster does not believe them. As a result, the adjuster questions the entire case. This results in a lower settlement. If you have a lawyer handle the case, then he will avoid these pitfalls. Also, whatever you say is an admission that can be used against you. If a lawyer speaks for you, then his statements cannot be used the same way.

A Lawyer Handles the Details.

Our office can get a fair payment for your car without you having to haggle with the adjuster. We can determine who should pay the medical bills. If there is no insurance, we can, in almost all cases, work with the health care providers so they will accept payment when you get paid. If your health insurer asks to get paid back, we can negotiate a settlement with them. When you are hurt and in pain, you will not want to handle these matters and you probably do not know how to handle them. We have the experience to deal with these issues so you don’t have to.

A Lawyer Should Get More Money.

Surveys show that lawyers get larger settlements than a person who negotiates his own claim. In fact, the settlements tend to be significantly larger even when the lawyers’ fees are taken into account.
